No Transitional Governments Will Be Established

Ažurirano: 28.01.2025. 22:04h

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić announced this evening that he will be inviting representatives from political parties for discussions following the resignation of Prime Minister Milioš Vučević.

Speaking to the public from the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, he clarified that these discussions will focus on either forming a new government or initiating early elections, stating he supports both possibilities.

He stated that, per protocol, the resignation of the Prime Minister must be conveyed in the Serbian Parliament, where there is a 30-day timeframe to elect a new government.

“If this isn’t accomplished, we will proceed to elections,” Vučić declared.

Vučić indicated that Vučević, who also leads the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), has already entered talks with coalition partners on this matter.

Previously, Vučić took part in an extraordinary session of the Serbian Government.

No Transitional Governments Will Be Formed.

Vučić stated the Government will enact various decisions during its transitional period.

“Elections could be held in roughly 75 days, with April being the most likely month,” Vučić noted.

He emphasized that there would be no transitional governments.

“The citizens of Serbia desire competent leaders, not untrustworthy politicians seeking to eliminate their opponents. When did we ever obstruct others’ political discussions, like in Rakovica the other night? Who are you to justify that? Just because the state is tolerant does not mean we can ruin others’ lives. Our main focus in the upcoming month is to ensure complete stability. I will be personally involved,” Vučić stated.

Three or Four Names in Mind, Elections Possible.

Vučić emphasized that as president, he will suggest a prime minister-designate, but must adhere to certain restrictions.

“I must suggest a prime minister-designate recognized by the parliamentary majority, or someone who persuades me that there is enough support to elect this candidate. Therefore, I will initiate discussions. I do have three or four names in mind, but I am uncertain if we will avoid elections. Within ten days, I will inform you whether we will head towards elections or appoint a new government, at which point I will be ready to discuss potential candidates for prime minister,” he remarked.

The Incident in Novi Sad Reflects Poorly on Us All.

Vučić remarked that attacks on SNS offices have persisted throughout Serbia for weeks.

“Wherever anyone decides to act, they assume they have the right to threaten both the offices and individuals within them. Just last night, between three and four a.m., members from the same anarchistic group in Novi Sad vandalized and defaced party property. When our members confronted them, things escalated, resulting in one of these individuals injuring a girl,” Vučić detailed.

“We cannot tolerate violence in our name after our calls for dialogue and peace. Those responsible have inflicted significant harm on Serbia, their party, and all of us,” he added.

He mentioned that “the opposition, along with students, made a substantial political miscalculation at Autokomanda, attracting far fewer attendees than they anticipated.”

“Alongside numerous favorable developments, then this unexpected situation arose. Miloš sought a discussion with me, expressing, as a responsible individual from Novi Sad, his belief that he and Mayor Đurić should step down,” Vučić said.

He noted that Vučević performed admirably and committed no wrongdoing.

“Yet he understood that we needed to establish the principle of accountability differently than our predecessors,” Vučić added.

He asserted that Vučević’s decision will be remembered as a hallmark of responsibility and seriousness.

“He showed that the office does not hold more importance for him than principled action, and that’s how he proceeded,” Vučić remarked.

After the resignation of Serbian Prime Minister Miloš Vučević, Vučić outlined the next steps:

“His resignation will be submitted to the National Assembly, initiating a 30-day deadline to elect a new government. If none is elected, elections will automatically be called,” he explained.

The President is obligated to initiate the process for a new government formation, he emphasized.

“I will not shy away from consultations, although I anticipate insults and other grievances from those who barely command two or three percent of the political landscape, yet think they are impressing someone,” Vučić remarked, affirming his intent to invite everyone for discussions.

“Let us deliberate on whether to form a government or proceed to elections. I remain open to both alternatives,” Vučić stated.

He noted that Serbia has been placed in a precarious situation and is facing immense external pressure due to the irresponsible actions of some political figures.

“Our stability, civil peace, and many other aspects are in jeopardy. Some engage in daily acts of violence in various forms,” Vučić expressed.

Thirteen Pardons to Be Granted.

The President of Serbia announced he will authorize pardons for 13 individuals arrested during prior protests tomorrow.

“There is a process in place, including a pardon commission, and I will sign it tomorrow afternoon,” Vučić confirmed.
