“Spain’s Recognition of Kosovo: A Potential Move Towards Balkan Stability”

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, emphasized the robust relationship between Kosovo and the United States, highlighting his close collaboration with Washington.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper “El Mundo,” Kurti referred to the economic agreements established between Kosovo and Serbia during Donald Trump’s first term, stating that these agreements were a reflection of that era and played a role in enhancing stability.

“Kosovo enjoys a strong bilateral relationship with the United States, grounded in their unwavering support for our sovereignty and our aspirations to join the EU and NATO. During Trump’s initial term, prioritization of economic agreements between Kosovo and Serbia aimed to foster stability, while the Biden administration has focused on reinforcing democratic institutions in the Balkans. These differing approaches illustrate changes in policy, yet I do not foresee the U.S. altering its stance on Kosovo. We are actively collaborating with Washington,” Kurti expressed.

Addressing Spain’s refusal to recognize Kosovo, Kurti pointed out that there are other EU nations with closer ties to Serbia, yet they have chosen to acknowledge Kosovo’s independence.

“This indicates that the recognition of Kosovo does not solely depend on economic ties with Serbia; rather, it hinges on a sovereign choice based on principles of justice and international stability. Should Spain choose to recognize Kosovo, it would represent a constructive step toward stability in the Balkans. EU enlargement discussions are ongoing in Brussels, and such a move would be a strong response to those attempting to undermine Europe’s integrity and unity,” he remarked.

He affirmed that there are no significant issues between the two countries that could hinder recognition.

“Spain’s history includes regions that have sought greater autonomy or even independence. The situation in Kosovo is unrelated to Spain’s internal political context,” stated the Prime Minister of Kosovo.
