Who else but the Lakers, the NBA reduces the influence of stars with an incredible trade

“Only the Lakers: NBA Shakes Up Star Power with Bold Trade”

No one saw it coming; only a select few were aware that Luka Dončić, who guided Dallas to the finals, would be joining the LA Lakers while Anthony Davis would head the other way.

This was particularly surprising as LeBron James, the face of the NBA, had been vocal about the need for more height on his roster to clinch another title, with Montenegrin center Nikola Vučević being anticipated to join alongside Davis…

However, the executives from Dallas, the Lakers, and Utah had other ideas. The Jazz were eager to be part of the trade, as any deal would be incomplete without the first “Jazzer,” Danny Ainge.

LeBron even expressed his frustration when it was suggested he’d known about Davis’s reluctance to remain on the squad.

The Lakers endured a challenging stretch between Kobe Bryant’s final season and LeBron James’s arrival, marking the franchise’s longest unsuccessful period. The Lakers have a storied past of acquiring top-tier MVP talent from other teams, including Wilt Chamberlain from Philadelphia in 1968, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar from Milwaukee in 1975, and Shaquille O’Neal from Orlando in 1996…

They’ve also added other legends like Howard, Gasol, Nash, and Davis…

With LeBron turning 40 and nearing retirement, the Lakers wanted to avoid placing too heavy a burden on Davis, who will celebrate his 32nd birthday in March. Additionally, Davis is set to enter a maximum contract next season, placing him among the league’s highest earners.

The storied franchise is likely on the hunt for another star, possibly targeting Shay Gilgeous-Alexander from Oklahoma, as he has no lengthy contract. Securing Dončić would also facilitate the acquisition of another major superstar, enhancing the Lakers’ profile and financial situation with the addition of the 25-year-old Slovenian.

But what about Dallas? The Mavericks are faced with making Dončić the highest-paid player in history this summer—344 million by 2031. Their recent finals loss demonstrated that a more balanced team is key to claiming the championship. With too many offensive options on their hands, Dončić is facing more frequent injuries due to his weight (122 kilograms), limiting him to just 22 games out of 49.

Dallas has brought in Klay Thompson to support Doncic, although his attention has been more on leisure than basketball training… And with Kyrie Irving in the mix, the urgency to manage finances is heightened. Davis’s choice to forego a 13 percent trade bonus means that Dallas can avoid paying additional luxury tax, which had exceeded the limit by 5.1 million.

The disbelief on Kevin Durant’s face upon seeing a teammate’s phone reveal these developments signifies that no player is now above a trade—it’s evident that the NBA is shifting the balance of power from individual stars back to franchises.

“It’s a business on a grand scale, and we shouldn’t complain. Our salaries are incredibly lucrative,” the Phoenix superstar commented.

C.J. McCollum of New Orleans voiced his concerns more directly.

“I can’t discern truth from fiction anymore. Is Luka actually going to the Lakers? I guess I should prepare for anything. If Don is traded, only time will tell what follows,” the New Orleans player noted on social media.

Dončić’s potential move has also shifted betting odds, with the Lakers now having their championship odds reduced from 41 to 22.

Meanwhile, Dallas’s odds for a championship have worsened from 19 to 41. Analysts have varying viewpoints.

“King James will be at Utah; without the height he sought, this team won’t reach the ring. Defying his will, the Lakers are focusing on the future,” lamented Steven Aismith, ESPN’s editor.

The Lakers seem to be strategically positioning their roster for the long term, as their first pick in the 2027 draft will go to Utah, yet it’s technically owned by the Lakers, illustrating a pattern where the Jazz continue to assist the great Los Angeles dynasty.
