Somewhat surprisingly, Milena Raičević announced her retirement from her illustrious career following the last match of the Montenegrin handball team at the European Championship.
After the game against Sweden, she expressed her happiness that she was able to conclude her journey while representing her national team, despite not achieving similar success with the blue and white Budućnost.
The day after, the prominent player from Podgorica shared the news that one of the club’s all-time greats had hung up her boots, along with a message honoring the legendary number 90.
“Milena, after all the trophies you’ve secured, we will cherish only the wonderful memories,” Budućnost stated on their social media.
During her time with Budućnost, Milena achieved European Championship glory twice, in 2012 and 2015, as well as winning the Cup Winners’ Cup in 2010.
“The time has come for yet another player from Budućnost to bid farewell. Milena Raičević played her final match last night. Thank you, Milena, for all the pride, emotions, and fighting spirit you brought us,” Budućnost added.
A little over a year ago, the Management Board of Budućnost Bemax assigned Milena to the Rudar branch after she had taken legal action against the club for unpaid wages from the 2020/21 season during her pregnancy. Following this incident, she parted ways with the club and subsequently joined Rapid in Bucharest.
The Handball Association of Montenegro also conveyed their sentiments to Milena.
“The conclusion of an extraordinary saga – Milena Raičević bids farewell to the sport of handball. The match against Sweden at the European Championship marked the end of a remarkable athletic career,” RSCG remarked.
They highlighted the three medals Milena earned while donning the Montenegrin jersey, including European gold, bronze, and Olympic silver.
“A heart and soul of a ‘lion’, she embodies struggle, perseverance, and an indomitable spirit. Thank you, Milena, for making us proud, inspiring generations, and teaching us the meaning of fighting for your country. Your legacy will forever shine in golden letters in the annals of Montenegrin sports. We wish you the best in your future endeavors,” concluded RSCG.
