The Organization of the European Championship Marks a Historic Milestone for Montenegrin Judo
Montenegro is set to host the European Senior Judo Championships from April 23 to 27, 2025, marking the first time the country will organize this esteemed sporting event, as announced by the Montenegrin Judo Federation at a special event.
“This is a historic moment for Montenegro, as we host such a prestigious sports competition, which is not only a significant achievement for our judo community but for Montenegrin sports as a whole. The organization of the European Judo Championship brings immense honor and responsibility — to showcase our sport at its finest and to demonstrate that Montenegro is ready for high-caliber events,” stated Jovica Rečević, President of the Judo Federation of Montenegro.
This championship, he emphasized, will place Montenegro on the map of European and global sports, providing benefits beyond judo, including tourism promotion, economic boosts, and elevating Podgorica as a regional sports hub.
“We take particular pride that this event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Judo Federation of Montenegro. This championship will be the pinnacle of our jubilee, a testament to years of dedication, hard work, and vision from those dedicated to advancing judo in Montenegro,” Rečević remarked during the event, which also unveiled the jubilee logo and a promotional video for the European Senior Championships.
Dr. Suad Šabanović, President of the Medical Commission of the Judo Federation of Montenegro, noted that judo benefits not only physical health but mental well-being as well.
“Judo instills discipline, enhances physical strength, and nurtures mental fortitude, making it one of the best means to prevent injuries, boost immunity, and sustain vitality. The European Championship we are organizing will serve as an excellent platform to promote these values while showcasing Montenegro as a capable host for such a prestigious event,” Šabanović stated, adding that UNICEF recommends judo for children ages 6 and up.
Coach Ilija Vukotić shared that the competitors are diligent and highly motivated, and they will feel even more inspired to shine in front of their home audience. Currently, nine judokas have qualified, with hopes of at least two more securing their spots before the championship kicks off.
“We anticipate a competitive championship; events like this attract the top-tier athletes in judo. Many are vying for a place in the upcoming Olympic cycles and valuable ranking points, ensuring robust competition,” Vukotić highlighted, mentioning that for several of our competitors, this will be their first significant appearance.
Rečević expressed gratitude to the Government of Montenegro and relevant ministries — sports and youth, as well as finance — for their invaluable support.
He also acknowledged that the successful execution of the European Senior Championship would be impossible without the backing of partners, business collaborators, volunteers, and, crucially, our athletes, who will represent us with pride. The President of the Judo Federation also thanked the general media sponsor — RTCG, along with other media outlets that cover and promote judo.
Judokas Jovana Peković and Anto Dubeta, who were present, also expressed their excitement for the competition being held in Podgorica.
“Judo has taught me the value of perseverance and that effort is rewarded in the end. Anyone involved in sports understands the importance of support – thank you to everyone who backs us and believes in our national team,” Peković said.
Dubeta added that he hopes all competitors will leave with a sense of camaraderie, having enjoyed a welcoming atmosphere, and will take wonderful memories of Montenegro with them.
Messages of encouragement were delivered by Katarina Rodríguez and Kristina Pekola, vice-presidents of the European Judo Union, alongside Olympic champion Hijadat Hidarov, and well-known Montenegrin athletes, tennis player Danka Kovinić, and footballer Stevan Jovetić.
“Thus, April in Podgorica will witness a major event in the sports arena… We invite all citizens to come out and support the finest judokas in Europe, to be part of this historic sporting spectacle together,” concluded Rečević.
