The outcome reflects reality: We permitted excessive counterattacks.
Montenegro struggled to compete with Greece, as Dejan Savić’s first match as the head coach of the Montenegrin water polo team ended unceremoniously with a score of 18:10.
The team commenced the World Cup qualification tournament with a particularly heavy defeat.
“The result reflects our performance; we had our ups and downs. We managed to narrow the gap to just one goal, but we couldn’t stabilize our play—too many counterattacks were allowed, and we made numerous mistakes,” Savić commented.
The next game is scheduled against Serbia on Wednesday at 17:30.
“Prior to this tournament, I mentioned that our aim is to perform as well as we can and to assess our current level, minimizing mistakes where possible and exploring tactical options to elevate our game,” Savić elaborated.
Dušan Matković scored twice, finding the net in the first quarter when Montenegro held the lead.
“We started the match strongly and had a two-goal lead, but that advantage quickly evaporated. We found ourselves trailing later in the game and let the opposition score easily on counterattacks,” Matković noted.
