It has long been recognized that he is an exceptional goalkeeper, and the ongoing season, now his eighth in the world’s premier league, has further confirmed that Nebojsa Simic is improving with each passing year.

The goalkeeper for the Montenegrin national handball team has been performing remarkably in the Melsungen goal since the season began, propelling the northern Hesse team, “Die Roten” (the Reds), to the top of the Bundesliga standings after 15 matches.

The athlete from Bar boasts an impressive average of nearly ten saves per game, with some performances already being dubbed epic… Notably, during matches against the titans of German handball and reigning European champions, he logged 20 saves against Magdeburg, 19 against Kilo, and 16 against Flensburg.

Additionally, his standout performances against Leipzig (14 saves), Rhein Neckar Leuven (12 saves), and Stuttgart, Lemgo, Gumerzbach (11 saves each) are unforgettable…

In the match against Magdeburg, the winner of the 2023 Champions League and current German champions, he saved an astounding 65 percent of shots during the first half, maintaining nearly half by game’s end.

Following the match, he made a symbolic gesture to “lock” his goal, which only allowed 23 shots that day.

Melsungen and Simić have excelled not only in the domestic league but also in the EHF European League, where they have reached the main round with a genuine chance of making it to the quarter-finals. Just yesterday, they celebrated their victory in the finals of the German Cup.

Melsungen advanced to the semi-finals of the “Pokal” by defeating Flensburg (30:28), and in that game, our goalkeeper excelled with 13 saves.

This season, Simić has frequently secured his club’s goal, and just a day after Melsungen’s cup triumph, he “sealed” his contract as the Montenegrin “octopus”.

The German club has shown their faith in our goalkeeper by extending his contract until 2029. This means that Simić will proudly don the Melsungen jersey at least until he turns 36, remaining part of the world’s elite league.

– Simo is our strength, one of the top goalkeepers in the league. Based on this season alone, we see he can still elevate his game further,” stated the club’s sports director Mihael Allendorf.

Simić himself expressed his contentment.

“Rotenbach hale (Melsungen hall) feels like home to me, and I share a wonderful relationship with everyone here,” the goalkeeper for the “lions” stated decisively.

Though Melsungen may not be the top contenders for the German championship, with Simić in peak form, the possibilities are endless, including the chance of the Bundesliga cup arriving in the city by the Fulda River for the first time in history by the end of the season.
