Dejan Savić, the Serbian head coach, has been named the new selector of Montenegro’s Water Polo team, as announced today.

Savić takes over from Vladimir Gojković, who stepped down after the recent Olympic Games in Paris.

“The Montenegrin National Team will be guided by one of the sport’s most successful coaches, whose achievements have significantly impacted Water Polo. Throughout his playing and coaching career, Savić has amassed remarkable accomplishments that are a source of pride in professional sports,” stated the official website of the Water Polo and Swimming Association of Montenegro (VPSCG).

Savić is the fourth selector in the history of Montenegro’s Water Polo national team, following in the footsteps of Petar Porobić, Ranka Perović, and Vladimir Gojković. He led the Serbian national team from 2012 to 2022, winning 17 medals.

“We are honored that Savić, one of the most esteemed Serbian coaches, has accepted the opportunity to lead Montenegro. His passionate approach and capacity to motivate athletes are especially vital at this time. Moreover, it was important for us to have a selector who understands the mentality and specifics of this environment,” said VPSCG President Nikola Milić.

The VPSCG also highlights that Savić led Red Star to the European Championship title in 2013, and as a player, he secured 13 medals in top competitions.

“Receiving the call from Montenegro is not only a significant honor for me but also a fantastic chance to achieve remarkable results together. We have been formidable rivals in sports for a long time, yet we share a friendship that makes this new role feel welcoming. I consider this challenge a unique pleasure and a significant responsibility to which I will completely dedicate myself,” stated Savić, as reported by the VPSCG’s official website.

He is set to debut as Montenegro’s selector at the World Cup Qualifying Tournament, scheduled from January 7 to 12 next year in Bucharest.

“Savić is currently under contract with a club in Saudi Arabia, but during our discussions, he promptly informed the club leadership of his great desire to take charge of the Montenegro team. Thanks to our effective communication, he will continue with both the club and our national selection until June, with full cooperation commencing from that time through the end of the Olympic cycle,” added the VPSCG.
