The key to advancing the reform process lies in resolving the existing constitutional issues, the parliamentary crisis, and local-level challenges, stated Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović during his meeting with the European Parliament’s permanent rapporteur for Montenegro, Marjan Šarec.

“During a candid and informative discussion, it was recognized that seizing the current favorable climate within the European Union regarding enlargement is crucial, and that the future of the Western Balkans is rooted in an integrated Europe based on shared values,” the announcement indicated.

According to Milatović’s Public Relations Office, the President highlighted Montenegro’s position as the most advanced candidate in the EU negotiation process and its strong potential to become the next EU member state.

He underscored the ambition for Montenegro to join the EU by 2028, emphasizing that achieving a stable pace in closing negotiation chapters is essential.

“President Milatović asserted that all political stakeholders bear the obligation and responsibility to ensure institutional functionality and adherence to commitments stemming from the European agenda, stressing the importance of maintaining Montenegro’s leadership status in the EU membership journey, a goal supported by 80 percent of our citizens,” the announcement added.

He further noted that state unity, collective efforts, and a heightened focus on reform initiatives are vital for Montenegro to reach this objective.

Marjan Šarec, the European Parliament’s rapporteur for Montenegro, reiterated that Montenegro’s accession to the European Union is important for the overall stability and progress of the region, assuring that the European Parliament will continue to provide robust support for the country’s path towards full membership.
