The current generation of students protesting against corruption in Serbia has spent their lives under the rule of the Serbian Progressive Party, the conservative and nationalist party led by President Aleksandar Vučić. This generation was born after the fall of Slobodan Milošević’s regime and has seen little political diversity, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

These young people are increasingly disillusioned with what they perceive as a diminishing democratic environment, having been mere children when Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić was assassinated in 2003. For weeks, they have held protests and blocked access to numerous faculties.

A group of four students shared their motivations for protesting with Agence France-Presse, emphasizing their determination to continue their demonstrations until their demands are met.

Their requirements include a 20% increase in the budget for higher education, the release of all documents related to the renovation of the Novi Sad train station, the apprehension of those responsible for attacking students and professors during protests, and the dismissal of charges against arrested students. Recently, 13 of those detained were pardoned, according to the French agency.

Vanja Šević (22), a senior at the Faculty of Film Arts in Belgrade, expressed that the COVID-19 pandemic has “taken so much away” from students.

“Today, our right to express ourselves, our right to safety, and our fundamental rights are jeopardized. As the educated youth and future leaders of this nation, we must rise up and inspire others to do the same,” the student stated.

Aleksa Stefanović (20), who studies computer science, mentioned to Agence France-Presse that “the situation is reaching a breaking point.”

“We clearly see that the people who bring us aid at the blocked universities all have their own tragic stories. The reality is that surviving on the minimum wage of 540 euros is impossible,” Stefanović added.

Emilija Šuković (23), a dentistry student, remarked that “students now encompass a broader role than just academics.”

“There are many citizens supporting us, as the challenges we face, whether at my faculty or elsewhere, stem from the incompetence of those in power. This results in a lack of security for everyone,” she stated.

“It is crucial for our generation, full of energy and potential, to take action. We are also motivated by the injustices faced by those who came before us. Now it’s our time to act and feel a responsibility to fight, not just for ourselves but also for the older generations,” she concluded.

Jelena Vujanović (26), a textile design student, reflected on her parents’ protests during the fall of Milošević, believing that change was imminent.

She contended that after Đinđić’s assassination, her parents attempted to provoke change but ultimately fell short. Now, the younger generation is frustrated.

“We will not back down until institutions are reformed. The president’s concessions and calls for dialogue often feel more like threats, along with the prevalence of hate speech. Initially, I was afraid of the possible repercussions, but I’ve come to understand that we are united and strong,” said student Jelena.
