The Boxing Association of Montenegro (BSCG) has declared the year 2024 as the most remarkable year in the recent history of boxing in Montenegro.
“Alongside 2022, when Bojana Gojković and Tamara Radunović earned Montenegro’s first senior medals for women’s boxing at the European Championship, this year, 2024, stands out as the most successful period for Montenegrin boxing. All planned programs were executed, our boxers showcased exceptional performances at various tournaments and championships, and two significant world competitions were expertly held in Budva,” stated the BSCG.
The organization highlighted Tomislav Đinović’s achievements as particularly noteworthy.
“This year was notably defined by Tomislav Đinović, who secured a bronze medal at the senior European Championship in Belgrade—the first for Montenegro in 24 years. Prior to this, only Nikola Sjekloča and Milorad Gajović had accomplished this feat back in 2000 at the European Championship in Tampere, Finland. The medal in Belgrade could have been even more remarkable if Đinović hadn’t suffered an injury. The medical team made the decision to halt his participation in the semi-finals, preventing him from competing against Russian fighter Vsevolod Shumkov due to a jaw injury sustained in the quarter-finals,” BSCG reported.
In addition to his medal success, Đinović was honored as the best athlete in Podgorica.
“Alongside his senior bronze medal, Đinović also took home another bronze from the European U23 Championship in Sofia and was recognized as the best boxer at the 61st International Tournament ‘Belgrade Winner’ in addition to winning a gold medal. His outstanding performances and achievements were acknowledged by the capital city, which named him the top athlete of Podgorica. We anticipate similar recognition at the national level from the Montenegrin Olympic Committee and the Association of Sports Journalists Montenegro,” BSCG highlighted.
The year was further distinguished by Bojana Gojković earning a silver medal at the European Under-23 Championship in Bulgaria and qualifying for the Olympic Games in Paris. Additionally, Nikola Raičević won a bronze medal at the European Schoolboy Championship in Banja Luka, while Matija Roganović became a champion in junior competition. His brother Miloš also achieved silver at the Balkan Championship in Loznica, along with younger schoolchildren and juniors who secured medals at tournaments across Hungary (Eger Cup), Greece (Tiger Cup), Belgrade (Cup of Nations), Croatia (Zagreb Open), and Sarajevo (Mustafa Hajrulanović Italian Tournament).
“It is evident that boxing in Montenegro has experienced significant growth in recent years, both in terms of competition and organizational capabilities, as demonstrated by the successful hosting of two major world competitions this year—the Youth World Cup held in March at the ‘Splendid’ hotel in Bečići with participants from 21 countries, and the World Youth Championship set for late October and early November in Budva, featuring competitors from 76 countries. This has truly been a year to take pride in, one to remember and honor,” concluded the Boxing Association of Montenegro.
