According to Amer Kapetanović, the Secretary General of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), Montenegro stands the best chance of becoming the first member of the European Union (EU) in the Western Balkans. This statement was made during his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ervin Ibrahimović.

Kapetanović praised Montenegro for its achievements and confirmed that the RCC will persist in supporting the nation on its journey towards EU membership, as per the announcement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).

“Montenegro has demonstrated its readiness and has the most viable opportunity to be the inaugural member of the Union in this region,” remarked Kapetanović.

He expressed confidence that Montenegro’s leadership and its experience will play a significant role in further enhancing integration efforts within the Western Balkans.

Ibrahimović extended his congratulations to Kapetanović for his new role as Secretary General of the RCC and noted that the selection of Montenegro for the initial visit underscores the country’s leadership in the European integration process, highlighting the importance of collaborative regional actions among Western Balkan nations.

The Minister pointed out that political stakeholders have demonstrated a high degree of accountability and agreement by adopting essential legislation and fulfilling the criteria to close three negotiation chapters, which sends a strong signal to Brussels regarding Montenegro’s dedication to a European future.

“Montenegro is a commendable example of a successful reform trajectory and can inspire other countries in the region and beyond that EU membership is a realistic and attainable objective,” asserted Ibrahimović.
