The opening and closing of the tournament in Otopeni mirrored each other, showcasing the weaknesses of the Montenegrin water polo team against Greece.

The “Sharks” faced a clear defeat from Greece (17:10) in the third-place match of the World Cup qualifying tournament, with the outcome being determined in the second quarter where Dejan Savić’s team surrendered seven goals once again.

This indicates that our national team will have an incredibly challenging start in the April Superfinal in Kotor and Budva, facing Croatia in the quarterfinals. Had Petar Tešanović and his teammates triumphed over “Helena,” they would have competed against Japan.

The final tournament is slated for April 11 to 13, where teams will not only compete for the trophy, but also for three spots in the World Cup in Singapore. Croatia has already secured its place in the World Cup, while Spain and Hungary are likely to gain their spots through the European Championship.

Many aspects of this match were reminiscent of the earlier encounter between Montenegro and Greece. The “Sharks” initially led 2:1 with goals from Dusan Matković and Nikola Maskov but soon hit a defensive wall from Greece, watching their advantage quickly dissolve into a six-goal deficit.

During a nearly nine-minute stretch, Emanuil Zervedas’s net remained untouched, allowing the Greeks, aided by the outstanding Stlijanos Argiropoulos, to soar to a substantial 8:2 lead.

The outside player for Teodoros Vlahos’s team scored four times during this span, finishing three consecutive attacks flawlessly.

By halftime, Greece led 10:3, and although the last two quarters demonstrated a slightly improved performance from our national team, the reality was that the rivals comfortably maintained their significant lead, concluding at 17:10.
