Commemoration of the Martyrdom of 42 Partisans in January 1942 Observed in Lubnice
A delegation from UBNOR, along with anti-fascists from Kolašin and representatives from the Local Community (MZ) of Lubnice, commemorated the 83rd anniversary of the capture and execution of 42 partisans in that village. This annual remembrance takes place next to the memorial complex in Lubnice.
Darko Bulatović, the president of UBNOR and an anti-fascist, reflected on the events of January 1942 and the significance of this tradition.
“Each January, we gather to apologize and share our thoughts. We read the renowned names inscribed on the monuments, reminding ourselves of the value of freedom and the need to safeguard it. We understand the sacrifices Montenegro made to achieve freedom and to be recognized as a free and dignified nation. Anti-fascism is irreplaceable; history compels us to acknowledge that Montenegro thrives only when it is unique and respected globally. These ideals are our ‘front lines’—non-negotiable yet welcoming to all who seek a modern, developed, and European Montenegro,” he stated.
During the night of January 23-24, 1942, a much larger force of Chetniks, led by Pavle Đurišić, encircled the partisans from Kolašin and Berane. In total, 42 partisans were captured and executed, including 33 from Kolašin and nine from Berane. Their names are honored at the memorial complex in Lubnice.
A decade ago, the Kolašin UBNOR, in collaboration with the residents of Lubnice, renovated and enhanced the memorial complex in their village. The “Partisan March – Bjelasica 2017” was also held, featuring over 120 participants who trekked from Jezerin to Lubnica to pay their respects to the memories and legacies of the heroes.
