Today, the Higher Court in Belgrade ruled that a girl who struck and injured a female student with her vehicle during a student protest in New Belgrade is to be detained for a period not exceeding 30 days, as confirmed by the court to the Beta news agency.
The pre-trial judge at the High Court ordered the detention of M. S. (25) based on legal grounds, which include the risk of tampering with the investigation by influencing witnesses.
The court’s reasoning for the detention also highlighted “the nature of the offense and the seriousness of its consequences,” which have led to public unrest that could potentially compromise the fair and smooth conduct of the criminal proceedings.
Earlier today, the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office (VJT) initiated an investigation against MS (25) on suspicion of attempting to endanger the lives of multiple individuals through “reckless violent conduct” during the student blockade on Jurija Gagarina Street on January 24th.
The VJT noted in a statement on its official website that, during the incident, the affected student, KV, sustained “serious, life-threatening injuries.”
The suspect has yet to be questioned by the prosecutor, as the assigned defense attorney did not enter the prosecutor’s office due to a temporary suspension of legal services, as stated in the announcement.
The VJT has proposed to the judge in the preliminary proceedings of the High Court that M.S. be placed in custody to prevent any influence on witnesses, to avoid a repeat of the crime, and to maintain public order.
The investigation order accuses the suspect of committing the crime of “attempted aggravated murder.”
